Food Rescue

Food Rescue

Oct 17, 2023 | News and Updates

We never know who will knock on our door. This week a man knocked at our door asking if we would take some cases of sweet potatoes. He was a delivery driver in a big truck. He tried to deliver it but the company that was supposed to receive it refused to do so. We don’t know if it was ordered by mistake or if some other logistics error occurred.

The driver had the initiative to drive around to find a food bank to donate it, otherwise, the food would be dumped. He was really upset about this scenario.

Due to storage space available, we couldn’t take all of it, however, we managed to find another non-profit to get most of the 300 cases of sweet potatoes. Today we helped rescue more than 10,000 pounds of sweet potatoes. It took a village!

In the United States, over one-third of all available food goes uneaten through loss or waste. When food is tossed aside, so too are opportunities for improved food security, economic growth, and environmental prosperity. USDA is uniquely positioned to help address the problem of food loss and waste through its programs, policies, and guidance. Learn more at Food Loss and Waste | USDA.
